Infrared Observations of the Galactic Center

Sebastiano Von Fellenberg, University of Toronto

Six-panel sequence showing colorized simulations of star formation. Over time, swirling blue and yellow gas shapes evolve from a single star to the formation of a binary and then a five-star system. Distances are labeled in AU.

The First Stars: Formation, Properties, and Impact

A black hole with lights.

Witnessing the Quantum Nature of Spacetime in a Lab

Anupam Mazumdar, University of Groningen

A woman with shoulder-length brown hair, wearing a black jacket, a black and white floral scarf, and a silver necklace, smiles in front of a light-colored brick wall.

Sackler Lecture: Einstein’s Waves: New Cosmic Sounds

One century following Einstein's prediction of spacetime disturbances and gravitational waves, the laser-enabled special detectors LIGO achieved the most accurate measurement ever made by humans across science and engineering and revealed to us the gravitational-wave signals produced by the most powerful collisions of black holes in the universe. These revolutionary discoveries have given birth to a brand new field of astronomy, a completely new way of sensing the cosmos and exploring its darkest corners. I will review the first direct detections of gravitational waves and what they can teach us about the nature of black holes and other exotic cosmic events.
